A Randomized Trial: Naturopathic Care for Chronic Low Back Pain by Dr. Yan
If you suffer from lower back pain, you are not alone. About 80% of adults experience low back pain at some point in their lifetime. Sitting in front of the computer all day at work, a lot of us will go for massage for relief, however if your lower back pain persists for more than 12 weeks which is defined as Chronic Low Back Pain, and it could be explained by disorders of the spine.
The human spinal column is made up of 33 bones - 7 vertebrae in the cervical region, 12 in the thoracic region, 5 in the lumbar region, 5 in the sacral region and 4 in the coccygeal region. The spaces between the vertebrae are maintained and supported by round, rubbery pads called intervertebral discs, they act like shock-absorbing disks throughout the spinal column to cushion the bones and support body movement. The five vertebrae (L1-L5) at our lower back support much of the weight of our upper body. “If a patient has shifted vertebrae or scoliosis, it would lead to herniated discs, in which it is being compressed, bulge outward and leads to compressing spinal nerve roots, which will cause pain and swelling. There are many reasons lead to spinal nerve compression, such as diabetes or injury, but more commonly caused by long-term poor daily posture and habits.” Dr. Yan said.
Holistic Skeletal Adjustment Approach
Human bones are closely interconnected; one shifted bone would pull bones in other body parts to shift as well, creating a chain reaction in the skeleton.
“The human foot is like the root of the tree. All the symptoms start from the foot. So when a patient has uneven legs length, the upper body's bones that connect will be implicated, forming a dislocation or skew. For instance, a patient with uneven legs length will suffer from root imbalance, therefore they would tend to cross one’s leg in order to balance, which would lead to pelvis imbalance in long-run. Pelvis equals to the base of a scale, therefore it the scale’s base is tilted, it would lead to shifting of our lower spine that connects to it, and further affects upwards to the chest and neck, which results in scoliosis, high and low shoulders.” Dr. Yan said.
It explains that a holistic skeletal adjustment approach is the key to resolve chronic pain by restoring the overall body balance of a patient, which helps to reduce nerve irritability, increasing range of motion, and improving body function.
Dr. Yan (Dr. Ng Shun Yan, Doctor of Natural Medicine) stated she introduced spinal nerves and brain neuroscience research and studies from the United States 21 years ago. She has exclusively developed a holistic skeletal adjustment treatment that combines the essence of natural medicine, neuroanatomy and biomechanics. According to the anatomical part of the spinal nerve, using the principle of biomechanical leverage, she applies appropriate methods with her activator in a clever, natural, relaxed and pain-free way to instantly adjust the bones, so that the nerve can be released from tension, and to relieve root cause of chronic pain and disease. It is an accurate skill and therapeutic techniques delivered with its success recorded by over three thousand of clinical cases.
Passing on Expertise
Dr. Yan’s holistic skeletal adjustment approach is different from chiropractic and physiotherapy treatment. Dr. Yan’s vision is to save life and improving quality of life of people by freeing people from pain and dealing with the most fundamental problems and from its root cause to restore one’s body balance.
In 2016, Dr. Yan and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Shenzhen Research Institute organized a Health Management Technology course, hoping to pass on her medical studies and expertise in skeletal adjustment by training a new generation of health professionals, helping more people to restore their health in a natural holistic way, building a better future for the society, and to promote the rapid development of innovative natural medicine in Hong Kong.
"By the in-born reflex system of the patient's body, in the absence of pain, non-invasiveness, zero side effects and natural safety, the body’s frame will be reorganized to achieve immediate effects and make people healthier," She said.
